There's
No Accounting For Taste
Hampshire College Commencement Music 1986
For bagpipes, chamber orchestra, and jazz quartet. Bagpipes are traditionally
included at Hampshire College commencement ceremonies.
This piece was structured around an elaborate polytonal schema which
was based on the harmonic mean. This defined the number of sharps and
flats in the two keys used for each theme, the length of phrases, and
their overall placement in the piece. Then Mike decided not to play
a sax solo, so the whole balance was destroyed. : )
If anyone ever reads this and knows how to contact Kirsten Cook, please
put us in touch with each other. I owe her a recording of this piece.
She was exceedingly generous with her time, as was another piper who
performed with the Boston Pops. She threw her back out, rendering her
unable to perform the piece.
Single mike recording, unfortunately. Following credits are spotty for
the strings and brass players, some of whom were members of the Springfield
Symphony Orchestra or UMASS. Reeds, pipes, and jazz ensemble are correct.
Many were reading parts with wet ink. Troopers every one.

Hanon
Human Impulse Response 1998
What happens when your Disklavier practices Hanon. A conceptual piece
which parodies developments in improvisational programming. Ideally
the number of times the Disklavier "practices" these exercises
should influence the incorporation of phrases into computer-generated
"improvisation."
This piece was executed for Disklavier (MIDI driven player piano). This
synthesizer version runs at 400 bpm instead of the mere 150 bpm at which
the disklavier began to drop notes. The disklavier version is on videotape.
You may notice your heart rate increasing as you listen to this.
